The Rays Go ‘Younger’ Pitching Wise…

St. Petersburg, FL (The Captain) –

In a move to revitalize a foundering pitching staff, Plan A was unleashed this afternoon at ‘The Trop’…

Young J. P Howell, the pitcher who broke Roger Clemens strikeout record at Texas, was on the mound and he pitched well enough to help give the Rays a win against the Kansas City Royals…

With help in the field from Ty Wigginton and B. J. Upton as well as the bats of Delmon Young and Javaro Navarro, the Rays got a deserved 5-1 win…

There’s more ‘young help’ on the way for the Rays pitching staff who now will have the 25 year old James Shields as their ‘senior starter’ in the rotation…

I think this is a great move on the part of the Rays and look forward to watching the youngest and perhaps best starting pitching staff in the Majors as they go thru the rest of the season…

This is a team that most certainly CAN win ‘at least’ 75 games if all the pieces of the puzzle hold together…

Take yourself out to ‘The Trop’ and watch the Rays and their stars of tomorrow. You can then tell all your friends, "I remember when…

For now, that’s just the way I see it…

The 2007 Rays…

Bradenton, FL. (4/19/07) –

Well yesterday was my first official trip up to ‘The Trop’ to watch the 2007 Rays play baseball…

Scott Kazmir was pitching and for good luck I wore my green polo shirt. I figured ‘what the heck’ maybe it’ll bring the Rays luck…

Before the game I got to speak with Rays Senior Advisor Don Zimmer and talk about the young team and how much I appreciated him being there to help guide them along. I also talked with ‘Zip’ about the International League and some names both he and I remembered that came thru Syracuse where I watched many a baseball game…

Then I got to interview Joe Madden and found out a lot of his ball players were sick with some kind of ‘flu’. It was funny watching Rays Coach, Tim Foley, during practice wearing a surgical mask on the field…

I complimented Joe on the attitude and desire his young players were putting forth and he once again told me about how the Rays were building the team from within using their good young players…

To me, all of this makes perfect sense when you’ve got the BEST players in MLB throughout your Minor League system. The only problem seems to be will the fans agree as this team continues to mature???

With the like of Delmon Young, Elijah Dukes, B. J Upton, Carl Crawford, Ben Zobrist, Scott Kazmir and the rest of the young Rays players, what’s not to like about the future???

I for one say ‘patience’ is the key just like Don Zimmer mentioned to me and I agree with Rays Manager Joe Madden that things will only get better…

Do I see a World Series on the horizon? Not quite ‘yet’, but I do see a 75 win season and maybe 80 win season on the horizon…

Now the Rays need ‘at least’ 2 good middle inning relief pitchers because the bullpen they have now is having to much trouble holding the early leads the Rays have been getting in many of their ballgames…

Jorge Cantu ‘might’ be used to gain at least 1 middle inning reliver if he gets traded as he’s asked. Currently batting about .250 with Durham after having a spectactular season 2 years ago in Tampa, he’s got a ways to go before I’d call him ‘serious trade material’…

So for now it’s take me out to the Rays game to watch some exciting and hungry young Rays players as they grow into mature MLB savvy players…

Folks, comeone out and have some FUN at ‘The Trop’! I can guarantee you that you won’t be bored…

For now, that’s just MY baseball opinion…

The Tampa Bay Rays Game July 23rd…

SARASOTA, FL. (NS/TheCaptainsAMERICA) –

Sunday was our latest trip up to ‘The Trop’ to watch the Rays play the Orioles. We started out the way ‘Big Ed’ and I usually do, by going down onto the field before the game with our Media passes to interview Rays Manager Joe Madden and anybody else we could find…

Of course Joe Madden has become a fan favorite because he is just what he appears to be, a darned niced guy. What surprised me on my trip to ‘The Trop’ this time was talking with the Rays President Matt Silverman…

I thanked him for the job he was and the new ownership were doing to make Baseball games more fun and a real pleasure to go watch. I also told him about our radio show listeners and all the great and supportive comments we were getting…

What surprised me was Matt Silverman looked me square in the eye after handing me his card and told me to give him a call whenever I needed any help from the Rays in helping to promote them on both "The Captain’s AMERICA" and "Sports Talk LIVE" radio shows that I host along with my Producer ‘Big Ed’ Edwards…

That meant a lot to me as a broadcaster but more as a fan. The mere fact that the Rays President took the time to discuss how he could help us in promoting our Nation’s past time, baseball…

If you haven’t been to a Rays game at Tropicana Field, you need to go and check it out! It’s a great atmosphere and lots of neat stuff for everybody in the family or group to see besides the ball game…

Captainsamerica_top_120 So the next time you’re looking for something to do, go to a Tampa Bay Devil Rays baseball game. Get in on the fun others are all talking about. You’ll be glad you did…

As one fan to another, this young Rays team is fun watching and they ARE going to be a contender in the AL East, SOONER, rather than later. Mark MY words, you will be watching some of the BEST young up and coming baseball players in Major League Baseball today when you come to see the Tampa Bay Rays play at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL…

See y’all there. Just look for ‘The Captain’ and you might also spot ‘Big Ed’…

Good Luck Aubrey…

SARASOTA, FL. (TheCaptain’sAMERICARadioShow) –

One of the best people you’d ever want to meet in a baseball uniform and justr an all around ‘good guy’ is moving on the bigger and better things in Houston…

Aubrey Huff, Mr. Tampa Bay Devil Ray, with more records than I’ve got time to write is head to the Houston Astros in a trade that has sent 2 Minor League Prospects and cash to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays…

Huff started out slow this season but had been on a real roll coming up to the All-Star break, batting .283 with 8 homeruns and 28 RBI’s…

Aubrey is well know for his torrid 2nd half finishes with the Devil Rays and is only 1 of 5 left handed hitters who have had more than 100 RBI plus seasons the past 3 seasons. He has hit 20 homeruns or more every year for 4 seasons as well…

I am absolutely sure Aubrey Huff will be a GREAT fit in Houston and will certainly be one of those players all of us here in the Tampa Bay area can say, "we remember when"…

Good bye and good luck Aubrey! We’re all going to miss you and wish you only the best in Houston with the Astros…

The Exciting Devil Rays Team…

Bradenton, FL. (The Captain’s AMERICA radio show) –

Hello again everybody!

How bout those young Devil Rays putting it TO the Boston Red Sox? They are coming together as a team at a time when I, for one, am NOT the least bit surprised because of what I’ve personally witnessed and heard when I’ve watched the Devil Rays…

Manager Joe Madden has brought an energy and enthusiasm that the team has fed on to give them a new ‘resolve’ and confidence in themselves to be able to win against any team they play in any game they’re in…

Jonny Gomes launches another tape measure shot at ‘The Trop’, Casey Fossom ‘flips’ 8 strikeouts which is a major accomplishment for him, Scott Kazmir has a complete 10 strikeout game, Ty Wigginton has 3 HR’s at a time when his bat is needed, Rocco Baldelli, Carl Crawford, Julio Lugo and the entire team is playing very well at a time when others are faltering…

Going into the All-Star break, the Devil Rays will have their best record ‘yet’ for the first half of a season. I can only think and hope that based on our good young players coming together and a LOT of really exciting players in the Minors ready to make an appearance with the Major League Club, bigger and better things are on the way…

Will it be this season? Probably not, but I can tell you that next year or the year after with some more additions to the Pitching staff, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays will be giving the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles all they can handle for years to come in the AL East…

If you get a chance, get on out and watch the exciting Tampa Bay Devil Rays team play baseball inside Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL…

The “New” Devil Rays…

BRADENTON, FL. –

Watching the Devil Rays new attitude under first year Manager Joe Madden is becoming more and more exciting for me and most of my friends that also follow the Rays…

I am hearing more and more callers tell me that on  "The Captain’s AMERICA" weekday morning radio broadcast heard on 1490 WWPR radio in Bradenton, FL. that I regularly host between 9 to 10 AM ET Monday thru Thursday…

Having been to ‘The Trop’ on several occasions and talking with Rays Manager Joe Madden, it’s easy to see how he won the Rays job. Madden brings an energy and a positive attitude to the Rays not seen here before…

He’s got the young Rays players believing in his system and the team on the field is reflecting his attitude in the way they’ve been playing…

While the Rays aren’t a Playoff team ‘yet’, when future Hall of Fame Manager Bobby Cox sits in the visitors clubhouse and says this is "a good young team that he wouldn’t be surprised to see at the top of the AL East in a year or two," you know the message is getting across the MLB baseball diamonds…

I can also tell you that if our young players continue to develop the way Scott Kazmir, Jamie Shields, Johnny Gomes, Jorge Cantu, Rocco Baldelli and Carl Crawford have, there’s absolutely no telling how far this group of young baseball players can go…

I for one encourage everybody to get out and see a Tampa Bay Devil Rays baseball game at Tropicana Field. The weather is always nice, you’ll have a lot of fun, make new friends and the food’s great. I promise you the quality of baseball you’ll see being played on the field will amaze you…

I would also like to encourage everyone to go check out "Sports Talk LIVE" and hear what you’ve been missing in the world of sports…

Both of my radio programs can also heard on the International Broadcasting Company’s "Stock Talk LIVE" broadcast and BX Radio’s "Cool Cast" 24/7 Internet Podcast Network…

For now, I’m ‘The Captain’ and that’s my take…
